Accidents happen more often than we’d like, but the important thing is to be prepared. For this reason, at Harley Street Dental Studio we provide emergency appointments for our patients in the heart of London. This might alleviate some concern, but you still need to get here! Here is a brief guide to what to do in a dental emergency.
Dealing with a dental problem requires a cool head. Keep the following tips in mind and you’ll have no reason to worry.
Firstly, try to find the tooth. Don’t worry if you can’t, we’ll be able to work around it. But if you do locate the tooth, it might be possible to re-insert it. Clean the tooth gently, avoiding the root, and attempt to put it back in place. If it won’t go back, don’t force it. Instead, put it in a container with milk, or gently rest it against the inside of your cheek. Get in touch as quickly as possible – the quicker you get in touch, the higher the chance of saving the tooth.
If your tooth is fractured, it’s likely that it will be beyond repair. However, you can avoid the situation from worsening by washing your mouth with warm water. In the event of swelling, place a cold compress on your mouth and cheek. Again, it’s essential to contact the practice as soon as possible.
If you’ve severely bitten your lip or tongue, you might have to go to a hospital emergency room for stitches. The swelling can be reduced by rinsing your mouth with warm water and using a cold compress.
Toothache could be a sign on infection. Try washing your mouth out and flossing. If this doesn’t help, we advise you to come for a check-up. Don’t rest painkillers on the gums or teeth because this can cause more harm than good.
