Gum contouring

Teeth aren’t the only thing that goes into making a winning smile – attractive gums also have a role to play. Too much pink on show can result in a ‘gummy smile’ and uneven gums can lend teeth looking altogether imbalanced.

If you have high or uneven gums, you’ll probably know how much of a pain it is to constantly hide your best asset when you really want to show it to the world.

If this sounds familiar, gum resculpting – also known as the gum lift or gum contouring – could be the answer. The treatment puts a safe laser to work reshaping the gums and restoring your confidence in less than an hour.

Laser Gum Contouring

We offer laser gum contouring from the comfort of our state-of-the-art Harley Street clinic. Our safe dental laser reshapes gums and reduces the appearance of high gums. The laser also seals pockets between tooth and gum which harbour bacteria. Laser gum contouring is a much more comfortable alternative to traditional surgical contouring carried out in around 20 minutes under local anaesthetic.

Gum Contouring Aftercare

It is common to experience tenderness and mild soreness in the days following the gum contour or gum lift procedure. You’ll find this can easily be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and your dentist will be happy to make a recommendation.

While recovering, continue to brush and floss as usual, taking care not to irritate the site gums. A soft-bristled toothbrush should help and you may also want to avoid hard foods such as seeded bread.

FEATURED PATIENT STORY

Hannah Patient of Dr Mark Hughes

Hannah had had orthodontic treatment but still disliked how much gum she showed when she smiled. Hannah also wanted a whiter, broader smile. After a gum lift to get the teeth into a better height-width proportion, her smile was restored with ten upper veneers on her upper teeth. This gave Hannah the outcome she was looking for – a wider smile with great proportioned teeth.

Gingival veneers

Receding gums are one of the main side effects of gum disease. Once successful periodontal treatment has been carried out and the inflammation of the gums is reduced, the appearance of recession may be even more noticeable. This can make the teeth look long which has the effect of aging your smile, it is where we get the expression ‘long in the tooth’. You may also find that gaps become visible between the teeth as the roots are exposed.

Gingival Veneers are a simple and cost-effective solution to replace the lost gum tissue and restore a more youthful looking smile.

In just two appointments, a tailor made veneer can be produced for you. The gingival veneer is made from acrylic and is removable to allow you continue to brush, floss and use interdental brushes to maintain your oral health and keep further gum disease at bay.
