What is a hygienist?
Hygienists are your smile’s best friend. They are dental professionals who are trained specifically in the art of keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy. At your dental check-up, your hygienist will look out for the health of both your gums and teeth.
They provide a range of services like scaling and polishing to keep your overall oral health in top condition. They can also help you design a bespoke oral hygiene plan to prevent recurring problems like staining, bad breath, gum disease, plaque build-up and more.
Harley Street Dental Studio’s hygienists are armed with the powerful Airflow system – an innovative cleaning system that leaves you with that fresh-from-the-dentist feeling.

What can they do for me?
Many people think that a hygienist will just clean their teeth, in fact there is a lot more to it than that. Your hygienist is able to provide a thorough clean that will achieve more than you are able to with a toothbrush at home.
-
Stain removal
Drinking tea, coffee, red wine or fizzy drinks will gradually stain your teeth over time, your hygienist will be able to clean these stains away using natural products like baking soda for a whiter smile. Our hygienists also use the innovative AirFlow system which uses air, sodium bicarbonate and water together to clean stains from your teeth.
-
Fresh breath
A clean mouth means fresher breath!
-
Prevention of gum disease
Early signs of gum disease include bleeding gums when brushing. Your hygienist will test for this and if they spot symptoms, with regular appointments, they will be able to help deal with this before the disease has the chance to progress. It is important to pay attention to these symptoms as if left untreated, gum disease can lead to the movement or even the loss of teeth.
-
Oral hygiene plan
We will work with your individual needs to create a tailor made plan for optimum maintenance of your oral hygiene. This includes recommending the right products, different types of brushes and showing you the most effective ways to use them.
-
Dietary advice
The food we eat can affect our teeth, this could be through staining or acid erosion. If your diet has had a detrimental effect on your teeth, our hygienists can advise on changing your eating habits to prevent further harm.
Hygiene routine
We all know that sometimes life gets in the way of the perfect oral hygiene routine which is why we are here for you and recommend a couple of appointments each year to help keep you on the right track. A thorough clean from the hygienist will make it easier for you to maintain a healthy mouth in-between visits. Improved oral hygiene could even mean fewer visits to the dentist!
When asked what they liked best about Harley Street Dental Studio, one patient had warm words for the great advice she receives from our hygienist, Sally Gross. She said: “I have never left without Sally giving me some useful advice, tips and starter props!”
ENQUIRE NOWHygienist FAQs
Why do my gums bleed after a hygienist appointment?
It is a common misconception that the hygienist makes your gums bleed. The bleeding is actually caused by your body’s protective response to plaque and bacteria on your teeth and gums. Any plaque that is not removed when brushing or flossing will irritate your gums and cause them to become inflamed and sometimes painful. As the hygienist removes this plaque, inflamed gums may bleed. With good brushing and regular visits to the hygienist this bleeding can be stopped.
My dentist cleans my teeth at check-ups so why do I need to see a hygienist?
Your dentist only has a limited amount of time to spend with you and their focus will be on assessing the health of your teeth to check the need for any restorations. They might provide a scale and polish, but this will be very quick. Your hygienist has a much longer appointment with you to spend time carrying out a thorough cleaning, they can also give you personalised advice on cleaning around bridges or implants and any special products that you should use.
Does it hurt?
Your hygiene treatment should not hurt. If you have particularly sensitive teeth or gums then we can use some anaesthetic to ease any pain. Please be sure to discuss this with your hygienist before and let them know during your treatment if anything is uncomfortable so that they can help you.
Why do they use electric instruments? My dentist cleans my teeth by hand.
Our hygienists will use an ultrasonic scaler to clean your teeth. This can be quite noisy and some people find that a little frightening but it is actually very gentle. This vibrates at a high frequency which makes it great at quickly and easily removing plaque and tartar, it is also kinder to your teeth than a manual scaler. A water jet washes away the plaque and also cools and soothes your gums during the treatment.
How long does a hygiene appointment take?
The length of your appointment will vary depending on your individual need, but this is usually between 45 minutes to 1 hour. The first time you come to see us we will dedicate a full hour to you so that we have time to thoroughly assess the health of your mouth and discuss your needs and concerns.
The hygienist always tells me to improve my brushing at home, but isn’t it their job to clean my teeth?
The main role of your hygienist is to support you in maintaining excellent oral hygiene, it is important that you work together. This includes giving you lots of tailored advice on how best to brush at home. A really good oral hygiene routine will mean that plaque does not build up on your teeth and calculus (solidified plaque) does not have the chance to develop. Minimising the amount of plaque and calculus on your teeth will also help to prevent gum disease which is one of the main causes of tooth loss. The treatments that your hygienist offers will give you a ‘clean slate’ to make this maintenance easier.
How often do I need to visit the hygienist?
This depends on the health and condition of your gums and can be as often as every 6 weeks or as few as every 6 months.

Very impressive dental practice. Dr Paul Wilson was very personable and took time to explain procedures involved for my situation. UPDATE: I was so thankful to find Dr Wilson who had the knowledge, experience and tools necessary to replace my worn out 35+ year old implant supported bridge. I cannot praise this wonderful and caring professional enough, and highly recommend him for any dental issues.

I am delighted with my new dental implants. I was told by other dentists that the implants I needed could not be done, however, under the care of Dr Paul Wilson I now have them. The care and attention I received from Harley Street Dental Studio was excellent, my concerns were listened to and as a nervous patient I was made to feel comfortable and in safe hands. Would definitely recommend.
