Articles What Happens During A Hygiene Appointment For Patients In London?

How can we help?

The hygienist: An oft-unsung dental hero and the scourge of plaque everywhere. When it comes to gum disease, or general oral hygiene instruction, there isn’t a better friend you can have than the mighty hygienist.

What is a dental hygienist?

A dental hygienist is a person specially trained in the prevention of gum disease. They are also trained to dispense advice on general oral healthcare.

So what will happen if I visit the hygienist?

Well, firstly, they will examine your medical records to check for any existing dental problems. They will then discuss your oral hygiene habits and see if they can offer and advice on your approach. They will then examine your gums thoroughly and may, depending on the state of your gums, take action! Regardless of the condition of your gums, they will then probably clean your teeth via a special, detailed process called scaling and polishing.

Scaling and polishing?

Our teeth are constantly awash with saliva, a substance which, amongst other things, contains a lot of calcium. Both the calcium and the other things help to strengthen your teeth, so this is good! Unfortunately, a by-product of their presence is that calcium deposits can build up between your teeth, much like lime scale in a kettle. These deposits can also be tooth coloured, making them easy to miss. The irony is that these build ups, caused by substances which strengthen your teeth, can in fact provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive. Scaling is a form of special clean which, unlike your toothbrush, can reach and remove these calcium deposits. The polishing will also help prevent bacteria from sticking to your gums!

Advice and instruction

Perhaps the greatest gift a hygienist can provide is their knowledge and insight. Aside from checking your gums and giving your teeth a good clean, they will provide you with the most up to date methods of maintaining your teeth. They can also offer dietary advice, as what you eat can also affect your teeth. Trust us; you will not regret a trip to the hygienist so contact us today at Harley Street Dental Studio in London!
