Articles A Calcium-Rich Diet Can Diet Can be a Great Benefit to Oral Health

How can we help?

Diet plays an important role in oral health. Often, you read articles telling you what you shouldn’t be eating, but there are foods you can add to your diet to help strengthen your teeth and reduce your risk of oral diseases, including gum disease and tooth decay.

Calcium is a very important mineral with a number of essential roles within the body. It is essential for good oral health as it helps to build and maintain healthy and strong teeth and bones.

About calcium

Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body and it has several important roles. In addition to keeping the teeth, nails and bones strong, calcium also helps to regulate muscle contraction and facilitates the process of blood clotting.

The most well-known sources of calcium are dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and butter, however there are other sources such as tofu, soya milk and beans, nuts and leafy green vegetables, including kale, broccoli and sprouts.

How much calcium do I need?

Adults are advised to take in 700mg of calcium per day. An average glass of milk contains around 300mg of calcium. Children and older people require more calcium, as their bones are weaker.

If you do not take in enough calcium it may result in calcium deficiency, which increases the risk of osteoporosis, a condition also known as brittle bones.

It is possible to get calcium supplements, however you should be able to take in all the calcium you need through your diet.

If you have any questions about diet and nutrition and how your diet can affect your oral health, our dentists and dental hygienists will be happy to help. We can also offer advice about oral hygiene, brushing and flossing and quitting smoking in the city of London.
