There are several orthodontic treatments now available at Harley Street Dental Studio, including so-called ‘invisible braces’ for those who feel that the prospect of wearing traditional metal braces may be an embarrassment that outweighs the helpfulness of treatment. One such ‘invisible’ system is ClearStep braces, which are able to help correct orthodontic problems without any need for self-consciousness.

How do ClearStep braces work?

ClearStep braces are made from clear, transparent aligners which are custom-made to fit your teeth perfectly. After an initial consultation, x-rays, photographs and moulds of your teeth will be taken, and your personal aligners will be made based on these. The basic principle behind the aligners is the same as other braces, using gentle pressure to ‘push’ your teeth into a different position. As the aligners are a set shape, you will need different aligners throughout the course of treatment, and you’ll also need to visit the dentist to ensure that treatment is going well. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks, and total treatment usually takes between nine and eighteen months.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ClearStep?

As mentioned, ClearStep braces are transparent, meaning that it’s virtually impossible for anyone to tell you’re receiving treatment. The results are also visible much more quickly than with some other braces, which can take years before treatment ends. ClearStep aligners are also removable, meaning that it’s easy to maintain good oral hygiene, as they can be taken out for eating or cleaning your teeth. ClearStep aligners are suitable for patients from children to the elderly. However, it is recommended that you do not smoke while receiving treatment, as the aligners will discolour. There will also be some slight discomfort from the aligners at first, as with all orthodontic treatments, but this will pass as treatment progresses.
