Losing teeth can have a negative impact on oral health, as well as confidence, and we are delighted to offer our patients an amazing long-term solution for lost teeth. Dental implants are one of the most exciting developments in modern dentistry.
Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for missing natural teeth. The actual implant is designed to replace the root of the missing tooth and once it is in place, it provides support for a new restoration, which replaces the crown section of the lost tooth. Implants are made from biocompatible titanium and they integrate into the bone tissue in the jaw bone through a process known as osseointegration. This process enables the implant to provide support and stability for the new restoration, in the same way as a natural tooth root.
Implant treatment usually takes place in two main stages after the consultation period. The first stage involves placing the implants in the jaw bone; this is usually done under local anaesthetic and involves fixing the implant into a small opening in the bone. The process of osseointegration takes between 3 and 8 months and during this time, a temporary solution is provided. Once the process is complete and the implant has integrated, the second stage begins. This involves placing the new restoration. Once this stage is complete, the new tooth or teeth will look exactly like healthy, natural teeth and you can start enjoying the benefits of a beautiful smile and strong teeth.
Dental implants are suitable for most patients; however, there may be certain instances where other treatments may be more beneficial. This may be the case if a patient has gum disease or is a heavy smoker. Smoking can affect the success of implant treatment because it slows the body’s ability to heal.
