Many of us experience headaches from time to time. There’s usually nothing to worry about, and headaches subside with painkillers. But if pain persists, there may be an underlying cause. In some cases, dental issues may be to blame and we can provide solutions to help combat pain and make you feel more comfortable.
There are lots of different reasons why you may be getting headaches. One possible cause is grinding your teeth. If you clench your teeth together during the night, this can cause tension to build in the muscles in your jaw, neck and shoulders. Grinding your teeth, also known as bruxism, is a common cause of TMJ disorder. This is a group of symptoms that affect the temporomandibular joint. This joint connects the lower jaw to your skull. As well as headaches, you may also find that you experience stiffness in your jaw, and you may hear clicking and popping noises when you open your mouth. Bruxism may be associated with stress, anxiety or orthodontic issues.
Some people also suffer from migraines. Migraines are severe headaches that may also cause nausea and photosensitivity (heightened sensitivity to light). It’s often not known what causes migraines, but sometimes it’s possible to detect triggers. Stress, illness and eating or drinking certain foods and drinks can increase the risk of a migraine.
We have various treatment options that may be beneficial for patients who struggle with headaches. For cases linked to bruxism, we can design a bespoke dental splint, which prevents contact between the upper and lower arches of teeth. For migraines, we can provide Botox treatment. Botox is usually used as an anti-ageing treatment, but it is also an approved therapy for migraines.
