What causes jaw joint pain?

Pain in the jaw joint can arise for a number of reasons. Pain is often a symptom of TMJ disorder or TMD. This is a collection of symptoms that affects the temporomandibular joint This is the joint that joins the skull to the lower jaw. As well as pain, you may experience symptoms such as clicking and popping noises when you move your mouth, stiffness in your jaw and a restricted range of movement. Jaw pain can also occur as a result of an injury.

In some cases, TMJ disorder is linked to bruxism. Bruxism is the medical name for tooth grinding. When you grind your teeth, it can damage the tooth structure, but it can also increase pressure on the muscles surrounding the joint.

If you suffer from jaw joint pain, we may be able to help by preventing tooth grinding. In some cases, this involves restoring damaged or uneven restorations, but often there is no clear cause. In this case, we recommend using a bite guard, a specially-designed appliance, which prevents contact between the top and bottom arches of teeth. The guard is custom-made for a comfortable fit.
