White filings are becoming increasingly popular and we are able to offer brand new fillings, as well as replacements for existing mercury amalgam fillings. With white fillings, we are able to restore a decayed tooth without changing the aesthetic in a negative way and often, the filling actually improves the look of the tooth.
White fillings are used to fill cavities in the tooth surface; they are very useful and effective because they not only look good, but they also help to prevent infection from becoming more widespread and increase the strength of the tooth, which enables you to chew more effectively. White fillings are made from dental composite and they are matched to the shade of your tooth to ensure that you can’t tell the difference between the tooth and the filling.
We recommend white fillings over mercury amalgam fillings because they provide natural looking aesthetics and they are safer than mercury fillings; we are proud to be an amalgam-free dental practice and we provide high quality, safe alternatives. Our dentists are trained to remove amalgam fillings safely and replace them with white fillings.
When a tooth is filled, it is first numbed to prevent the patient from feeling any pain. The dentist will then clean the cavity out by clearing away any decayed tissue and blasting away any plaque and food debris. Bonding agent is then applied to the cavity and the dental composite is placed inside the hole and spread around to fill the entire cavity. At this stage, the composite is soft and malleable, so your dentist can get a perfect fit. The composite is then set hard using a curing light in a process, which takes seconds. After this, your dentist will check the filling and trim any excess material.
