Articles Top Tips to Relax after Dental Surgery

How can we help?

The prospect of having dental surgery can be very daunting for some patients. We aim to make our patients feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible both before and after treatment. If you’re due to have dental surgery, and you need some tips to help you afterwards, here are some suggestions:

  • Take it easy: if you’ve had dental surgery, we strongly advise you to take it easy. Rest, don’t put pressure on yourself to get back to work, and take a couple of days off the gym. Don’t exert yourself too much, and give your body time to recover and heal. Wind down with a book, put your feet up in front of the TV, and get plenty of sleep.
  • Don’t run before you can walk: when you’re taking time out after surgery, it can be tempting to try and get back to ‘normal’ as soon as possible, but if you try and run before you can walk, this can be counterproductive. You might find that overstretching yourself does more harm than good and sets you back in terms of your recovery. Take every day as it comes, and see how you feel.
  • Avoid hard and chewy foods: when your teeth and gums are recovering, it’s best not to give them arduous jobs like trying to break down hard and chewy foods. You might find that if you’re chewing too much, this is painful. It’s a good idea to stick to soft foods like mashed potato, scrambled eggs and yoghurt for the first couple of days.
  • Listen to your dentist’s advice: we want you to make a speedy recovery, so please take the advice we give you on board! If you have any questions or concerns, we’ll always be happy to help, so don’t think twice about giving us a call.
