What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession happens when the gum tissue surrounding your teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or its root. While it’s a gradual process, it can have serious consequences if left unchecked. Around 88% of people over 65 experience some degree of gum recession, and it’s not just caused by ageing. Factors like periodontal disease, poor brushing habits, teeth grinding, and even genetics can all play a role. Smoking, hormonal changes, and orthodontic movement can also contribute. Receding gums expose the delicate root surfaces of teeth, leaving them more vulnerable to damage, decay, and sensitivity.
Primary causes and warning signs:
- Aggressive brushing techniques
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Genetic predisposition
- Teeth appearing longer or more sensitive

Why Treatment Matters
Left untreated, gum recession can lead to more than cosmetic concerns. The exposed root surface lacks protective enamel and decays much faster — 2.5 times faster, in fact. You may also begin to notice persistent bad breath, food trapping, or gaps forming at the gum line. Over time, this can escalate into bone deterioration, tooth loss, or even changes to your facial structure. Addressing recession early helps protect your teeth, restore aesthetics, and prevent costly future interventions.
Risks of untreated gum recession:
- Severe root sensitivity and pain
- Tooth loss or bone deterioration
- Increased risk of infection
- Ongoing bad breath or food trapping
- Costly and complex future treatments
Advanced Micro-Surgical Solutions
We offer a range of advanced micro-surgical techniques tailored to the severity, location, and needs of each case. The gold standard coronally advanced flap with connective tissue graft delivers the most predictable and long-lasting results, particularly in the upper jaw. For patients with multiple adjacent recessions or lower jaw concerns, the tunnel technique offers excellent aesthetics with minimal tissue disruption and faster healing. Where graft harvesting isn’t preferred or possible, we offer minimally invasive alternatives using allografts or collagen membranes — ideal for anxious patients or cases with limited donor tissue. Each option is designed for comfort, precision, and the best possible clinical and cosmetic outcome.

After stupidly having work done in Turkey where they just bridge all your teeth together I found this place I wrote a message to them and straight away Dr Peter mcquillan called me, I was in a mess as the teeth were so uncomfortable he put my mind at ease straight away, I knew then I’ve found a good dentist. I went to see him the next day what a kind and caring genuine young man. After hours in the chair repairing my teeth I now have a five star smile. I cannot thank Peter enough I now have my life back. Common Questions About Gum Grafting
Is micro-surgery painful?
The procedure uses only local anaesthetic, and most patients report minimal discomfort. The micro-surgical approach means less tissue trauma, resulting in significantly less post-operative discomfort.
How long does recovery take?
With micro-surgical techniques, initial healing occurs in 1-2 weeks. Most patients return to normal activities within 2-3 days.
Will the recession come back?
When performed correctly and with proper aftercare, success rates exceed 90%. Dr Marruganti will identify and address the cause of your recession to prevent recurrence.
Can you treat multiple teeth at once?
Yes, micro-surgical techniques allow treatment of multiple teeth in a single session, reducing overall treatment time and recovery periods.
What is special about micro-surgical techniques?
Micro-surgery uses magnification, smaller instruments, and precise techniques resulting in less trauma, faster healing, better aesthetics, and higher success rates.
How soon will I see results?
You’ll see immediate improvement in gum position. Final results develop over 3-6 months as tissues mature and integrate.
Am I suitable for micro-surgery?
Most patients with gum recession are candidates. Dr Marruganti will assess your specific case during the consultation to recommend the best approach for your case.
