Articles Dental Allergies Your London Dentist Thought You Should Know About

How can we help?

Most people may only know of food allergies, dust allergies, animal allergies and hayfever, when it comes to the list of things that can cause an allergic reaction. However, there are other, surprising allergies, which you may encounter on a trip to the dental surgery, so it is important that you are aware of possible allergens found in a dental practice.

Allergens in the dental surgery

Possible allergens you may encounter in a dental surgery include rubber and latex. Dentist’s gloves are often made from latex and rubber and some medical equipment also contains latex, so if you have a latex allergy, make sure to tell your dentist before you start your appointment. Other allergies include allergies to metals, local anaesthetics and other types of medicines used in dentistry.

What should I do if I have an allergy?

If you have an allergy you should inform your dentist before any dental work begins, so they are aware of your allergy and can tailor your treatment to your needs. If you are having treatment your dentist will explain the procedure to you and mention any possible medications that may cause an allergy. They will then check with you to see if you have had any allergic reactions in the past and take your medical history. Sometimes, mild allergic reactions are a side-effect of a treatment. If this is the case and you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, talk to your dentist and they will be able to provide treatment.
