Take The TestMost people are aware of the importance of brushing their teeth, but the benefits of flossing are often overlooked. Flossing is very important and it should form part of a good daily oral hygiene routine.
Flossing is the action of using dental floss to remove plaque and particles of food from the gum line and the tiny cracks between the teeth. There are many different brands and types of dental floss available, including flavoured floss and floss for sensitive teeth. Our friendly team will be happy to recommend floss and other dental hygiene products.
Flossing is important because it helps to target areas that you may have missed when you were brushing your teeth. The corners of the mouth, the gum line and the gas between the teeth are notoriously difficult to reach with a toothbrush and flossing is an effective means of removing bacteria and food debris from these areas. If you don’t floss, bacteria collects and plaque forms; plaque is a sticky white film, which clings to the tooth enamel, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.
It is a good idea to floss once a day; flossing can also be beneficial after eating. If you feel that you have a bit of food stuck, flossing will help to shift it and it will reduce the risk of bad breath.
If you have never flossed before, it is common to experience a little bleeding when flossing; however, this can also be symptomatic of oral health problems and you should see your dentist if bleeding persists or you have tooth pain or increased sensitivity.
Our dentists and dental hygienists are always on hand to provide advice about flossing and oral hygiene and they can show you the correct way to floss your teeth. For more oral health tips please contact Harley Street Dental Studio in the city of London.
