Articles What To Do If You Have a Dental Emergency
Emergency situations often occur without any prior warning and you often suffer injuries when you least expect to. With dental injuries, it is often the case that the sooner you see a dentist, the better, and this is why we offer urgent same-day appointments and advice for unexpected accidents.
Emergency appointments
We endeavour to see our patients as quickly as possible when they need urgent care and we offer same-day appointments where possible.
Our immediate aim is to free you from pain and we try our best to have you pain-free and comfortable within 15 minutes.
Registered patients are also able to take advantage of 24 hour emergency dental cover.
Dental emergencies
There are various injuries that may require urgent attention, such as broken teeth, dislodged teeth, facial injuries, severe and sudden dental pain and dental abscesses. In the case of jaw or facial injuries, we usually recommend that patients go to their nearest Accident and Emergency unit.
When you come for an emergency dental appointment, we will do our best to ascertain the type and severity of injury as fast as we can and then talk you through the relevant steps for treatment. It may be that we carry out temporary, short-term treatment to ease pain and then schedule another appointment to complete treatment at a later date.
Preventing dental injuries
Sometimes it’s impossible to prevent accidents, but there are some very easy ways to try and reduce your risk of dental injuries, including:
- wearing a seatbelt
- wearing a protective mouth guard when playing sport
- seeing a dentist if you have tooth pain
- taking good care of your teeth and gums
- avoiding using the teeth to bite or open things, for example taking bottle tops off
