What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding, also known as composite or cosmetic bonding, is a procedure used to strengthen the teeth and improve the aesthetics of the smile. Bonding is an effective treatment for patients with chipped and worn teeth, gaps between the teeth and discolouration and it is a safe, simple and affordable means of getting a great looking, healthy smile.

The bonding procedure involves using dental composite, which is colour matched to the natural teeth, to make adjustments and improvements to the teeth. Bonding may involve building up a worn tooth, closing a gap between two teeth or repairing a chipped tooth.

The actual procedure is usually complete within one hour, it is painless and most patients do not need anaesthetic. Composite is similar to putty and your dentist will shape it to carry out the necessary repair work and make your smile look more attractive; once the material is in place, it will be set firm using a curing light. Composite is not as hard as natural tooth tissue, but it is very strong and it should last a long time.
