Articles What Are Fissure Sealants In The City Of London?
At the Harley Street Dental Studio we strongly believe that prevention is better than cure and we offer preventative treatments to help keep you free from oral diseases. One treatment we offer is fissure sealant treatment?
What is fissure sealant treatment?
Fissure sealants are generally recommended for children around the age of 5-10 years old. Fissure sealants are plastic films, which are used to protect the teeth from decay and they work by creating a barrier between the chewing surface of the tooth and bacteria. If you run your tongue along your tooth or you looked at a tooth under a microscope, you would notice tiny furrows and pits, which are known as fissures. These cracks can attract food, which may turn into plaque if it is left in the tooth and combines with bacteria and saliva. Sealants help to prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped in the fissures, reducing the risk of plaque formation and subsequent decay.
What does the procedure involve?
Fissure sealant treatment is very straightforward and quick and there is absolutely no pain involved. Before the sealant is applied, the tooth will be cleaned thoroughly and any food debris will be removed. A bonding solution is then applied to the tooth to help the sealant to stick. The sealant is then placed on the tooth and a powerful light source is used to set it firm. Sealants should last for a few years and they can be replaced.
Sealants are generally used for the back teeth (the molars), which are involved in chewing and grinding and can be hard to reach when brushing.
