If you regularly start your day with headaches and can’t understand what’s causing you pain, we may be able to help. Sometimes, when there is no obvious explanation for a headache, for instance an injury or dehydration, headaches may be linked to tooth grinding or symptoms affecting the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).

Tooth grinding

Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common problem, however, many people are unaware that they grind or clench their teeth because it occurs as a subconscious action during sleep. When you grind your teeth, you place pressure and strain on your jaw and the TMJ (this is the joint that connects the skull to your lower jaw) and may increase the risk of facial muscle pain, head/neck/shoulder aches and stiffness when you move your jaw.

There are various possible causes of tooth grinding, including stress and anxiety, misaligned teeth and loose restorations, such as crowns.

Often with headaches, there are dental solutions that can help. When you come for your consultation, we can go through your symptoms and have a look at your teeth and jaws to find an effective solution. In cases where misalignment is an issue, we may recommend orthodontic treatment to even the bite (this is the way the upper and lower sets of teeth align when the jaw is closed and relaxed). We can also replace or repair loose fillings and crowns.

We also offer bespoke dental splints and bite guards, which are designed to prevent tooth grinding and subsequently reduce the risk of aches, pains and damage to the teeth. These devices work by creating a barrier between the top and bottom teeth.

We can also offer Botox treatment for patients who suffer with migraines on a persistent basis.
