About restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry is the area of dentistry concerned with restoring and repairing the teeth. There are lots of different restorative techniques and treatments available, including:

• Composite bonding: bonding is an effective technique that helps to repair minor problems such as worn tooth edges and chips. It involves using dental composite to patch up and reshape the teeth. Bonding also offers amazing aesthetic benefits and it only takes around one hour.
• White fillings: fillings are used to restore the teeth when a cavity (a hole in the tooth enamel) has formed. White fillings are made from dental composite and the procedure helps to strengthen the tooth as well as reducing the risk of infection spreading through the tooth.
• Dental crowns: dental crowns are sometimes known as caps, as they sit over the top of the natural tooth structure. Crowns may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged or decayed. They are custom-made to fit once the tooth has been prepared, decayed tissue has been removed and the remaining structure has been shaped. Crowns can be made from ceramic or metal and should last up to five years.
• Inlays and onlays: inlays and onlays are often considered the middle ground between fillings and crowns and they may be used when damage is too extensive for a filling, but not severe enough for a new crown to be required.
