Good oral hygiene is a great foundation for healthy teeth and gums and one way of ensuring that you enjoy good oral health is using inter-dental brushes. Inter-dental brushes are not the same as traditional toothbrushes, as they are designed to clean between the teeth.
Inter-dental brushes are small hand-held brushes, which are specifically designed to clean the areas between the teeth. They have longer, more flexible bristles than traditional toothbrushes and they are easier to manoeuvre between the teeth. There are various sizes of inter-dental brush available and they usually have different coloured handles to reflect this. You should use a brush size that is appropriate for you; your dentist can help you to choose the right brush.
When using your inter-dental brush, gently guide the brush head towards the area between your teeth and let the bristles glide through the gap. Never push or pull the brush as this can damage your gums. Try to establish a pattern when you brush, as this will help to ensure that you cover all areas of your mouth.
Your dentist will be able to advise you about when to use an inter-dental brush. It is generally advisable to use a brush daily, in addition to your normal teeth cleaning regime.
If you have never used an inter-dental brush before, you may find that your gums bleed the first couple of times you use them; however, if you notice bleeding after using the brushes for a while, or you are used to using brushes and you suddenly notice bleeding from the gums, you should see your dentist. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease.
