What is a crown?

A dental crown is a form of restoration; crowns are used to strengthen the tooth when it is weak as a result of decay or injury. A crown is sometimes known as a cap because it is placed over the top of the natural tooth. Porcelain crowns have become very popular because they blend in with the rest of the tooth and produce natural looking aesthetics; porcelain crowns are also safe and environmentally friendly.

A crown is usually fitted in two sessions; the first session is used to prepare the tooth and to remove decayed tissue from the tooth. Once the tooth is clean and shaped to receive the new crown, an impression is created and this is used as a template for the new crown. The new crown is then placed over the top of the natural tooth and fixed into place using strong dental adhesive.

After treatment, the crown will feel and look like part of the natural tooth; it is important that you look after your crown in the same way as your natural teeth.

Why would I need a crown?

You may be advised to have a crown if you have a tooth that has been weakened after an injury or accident, you have a large cavity or your tooth is decayed and at risk of further damage. It is also common to have a new crown following root canal treatment.
