Articles Terrific Treatment for Tooth Decay

How can we help?

Tooth decay occurs when the outer layer of the teeth is dissolved by acids in the mouth. There are numerous techniques available for London patients that can be used to treat and prevent this condition.

Fluoride treatment

This is the best option when it comes to preventing tooth decay. Fluoride is found naturally in food products such as fish and tea. It can also be manufactured and most toothpastes contain synthetic fluoride. If the decay is spotted in its initial stage, some concentrated fluoride varnish or paste can be applied to the affected area. This will stop the decay from spreading further. However if the decay has worn out the enamel, the dentist will remove the decay and place a filling to restore the tooth.

Fillings and crowns

Fillings and crowns are used when the decay becomes extensive. The filling is used as a replacement for lost enamel. Inlays and onlays can also be used for a filling.

In some cases, part of the decayed tooth might need to be removed. A crown will be placed on the remaining part of the tooth.

Root canal treatment

If the decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, artificial pulp will need to be placed to keep the tooth in place.

Extraction

When the decay is in its final stages and the tooth has been severely affected, the tooth will need to be removed in order to protect the remaining teeth from infection. Once the tooth has been removed, a bridge, denture or implant will be placed in the empty socket so that your smile remains fully functional.
