Dental injuries

There are various types of dental injury and illness, which may require urgent attention, including fractured and broken teeth, dental abscesses and severe dental pain and dislodged teeth (also known as avulsion).

For fractures and broken teeth, the injuries may not be detectable straightaway, but you may find that your teeth feels weak and you have toothache; if the tooth is fractured, this will show up on an X-ray and your dentist will decide the best course of action, which usually involves restorative treatment.

If you have a dental abscess, this requires urgent dental treatment to relieve your from pain and prevent the infection from getting worse. It is important that you see your dentist, rather than a doctor, if you have a dental abscess, as there is only a limited amount a doctor can do, as dental abscesses are treated in a different way to other abscesses. Dental abscesses must be drained to remove the fluid and after this, you should feel much more comfortable.

For dislodged teeth, speed is of the essence, as a dentist may be able to save the tooth if you can get here quickly enough. If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, find it, wipe it clean holding the tooth crown and not the root and then put it in a glass of milk and make your way to the clinic as quickly as possible. If you don’t have a glass of milk to hand, simply hold the tooth in your mouth on the inside of the cheek to keep it moist.
