Articles Soothe Your Dental Phobia with Sedation
Dental phobia is a relatively common phobia which may stem from negative experiences in the past, fears of needles, drills and injections or concerns about oral health and being told that you need dental treatment. We are aware that dental phobia can be a major obstacle to good oral health, as many patients avoid visiting the dentist at all costs. Our aim is to make you feel relaxed and comfortable and help you to overcome your fears so that you are able to attend regular appointments without experiencing anxiety.
How can sedation help?
Sedation is a method that we use to help nervous patients. We use sedative medication to induce a state of relaxation and calm, preventing patients from feeling discomfort when they have dental treatment.
Although patients remain conscious during the procedure, they usually remember very little once the effects of medication have worn off.
Sedation is not only used to help nervous patients. It is also beneficial for patients who are undergoing a long and complex dental procedure, or for those with a sensitive gag reflex.
What happens when you are sedated?
When you are sedated, you feel a little drowsy and completely calm. You will be able to hear your dentist and speak to them if you want to and once your dentist has finished treatment, they will give you medication to bring you around. The effects of the sedative will start to wear off and you will feel a little more alert. We advise you to bring somebody with you to the clinic so they can drive you home and stay with you until the effects have worn off completely.
If you have dental phobia and are scared to see a dentist, we can help. Our team is very friendly and understanding and we will do all we can to help reduce anxiety and make you feel more confident about having dental treatment.
