Why do I snore?

Most of us snore from time to time and it’s not usually a problem. But if snoring is a regular occurrence in your household, it’s time to do something about it. Snoring noises occur when the soft tissue at the back of the mouth vibrates as air passes through the airway. It is common to snore when you have a cough or cold, have been drinking or have an allergy. Yet if you snore regularly it could be a sign that you’re struggling to get enough oxygen while you sleep. The most common risk factors for snoring include smoking, being overweight, sleeping on your back and drinking alcohol at night.

How can we help?

There are various treatments and self-help techniques that are beneficial for dealing with snoring. Before formal treatment is recommended, you may be asked to make adjustments to your lifestyle choices or sleeping position. Such changes may include lying on your side rather than your back, cutting out drinking during the evenings, increasing the amount of exercise you do, losing weight and giving up smoking. We understand that some of these changes are difficult and require a more long-term approach. That’s why we’re here to provide guidance and support.

We can also provide two types of anti-snoring device: mandibular repositioning devices and tongue retaining devices. Mandibular repositioning devices move the lower jaw forward slightly while you sleep  to keep the airway open. Tongue retainers hold the tongue still, opening up the airway and helping you to breathe during sleep.
