Why would I need a filling?

Fillings are traditionally used to treat teeth with cavities; cavities are holes, which develop in the surface of the tooth when the enamel becomes weakened as a result of injury or acid erosion. Cavities can increase in size and there is also a risk that bacteria can spread through the tooth; a filling helps to prevent this, as well as making the tooth stronger and enabling you to use it to chew and bite.

We use layers of dental composite, which is matched to the shade of your tooth, to create bespoke ‘art restorations’, which are completely invisible when you smile. Does it hurt when you have a filling?

Many patients feel anxious when they require dental treatment and we adopt a very caring and compassionate approach. The procedure to fill a tooth is relatively simple and there’s nothing to be afraid of; the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and the tooth will be numbed completely to make sure that you don’t feel any pain at all. Typically, treatment is complete within the hour.
