Harley Street Dental Studio provides the finest quality porcelain crowns for patients with damaged or weakened teeth. We have a commitment to amalgam-free dentistry and we use the finest materials to ensure the best aesthetics and durability.
A crown, sometimes known as a cap, is a type of restoration, which is used to strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth. The crown is placed over the top of the tooth. Porcelain crowns are very popular because they match the natural colour of the teeth and are therefore indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth; they are also completely safe and very durable. Your dentist may advise you to consider having a crown if you have broken your tooth, suffered a dental injury or you have a tooth that has a large cavity or severe decay; most people also have new crowns placed following root canal treatment.
In most cases, placing a crown involves two appointments; this is because crowns are custom-made for the individual patient. During the first appointment, the tooth is cleaned and the damaged or decayed tissue is removed; a mould of the tooth is then created and this is used as a template for the new crown to ensure that it will fit the tooth perfectly. Once the new crown has been manufactured, it will be fitted and secured into position.
Porcelain crowns should last for several years provided that they are well looked-after; you should care for your crown in the same way as your natural teeth. It is not possible for the crown to become decayed, but the tissue that joins the crown can become decayed so good oral hygiene is very important. If you need any advice about caring for your crown, one of our friendly dentists or hygienists will be happy to help at Harley Street Dental Studio in the city of London.
