What are crowns?

Crowns are a form of restorative treatment, which are used to strengthen the tooth when damage is too extensive for a filling. If there is insufficient tooth structure remaining once decayed or damaged tissue has been taken away, it will not be possible for the tooth to support a filling and a crown is a much more effective option. Crowns can be used to restore the tooth following trauma, a sports injury or an accident or once a tooth has become severely decayed. We also place crowns after root canal treatment, a procedure, which is used as an alternative to extraction once an infection has reached the living tissue of the tooth.

Crown treatment

The aims of treatment are to make your tooth stronger, reduce the risk of recurrent infection and improve the aesthetic of the smile. We can match the colour of the crown to the natural shade of your tooth, so that you will not be able to tell the difference between your crowned tooth and your other teeth.

Before a crown is placed, your dentist will prepare your tooth thoroughly to remove any damaged tissue and shape the tooth in preparation for the new crown. Crowns are often referred to as caps because they are slotted over the top of the tooth.

Once the tooth has been prepared, a mould is created so that the new crown will match the shape of the tooth perfectly. Once the new crown is ready, it will be fixed into position using strong adhesive and the tooth will look and feel exactly like a normal tooth.
