Articles Orthodontics and Adult Braces

How can we help?

Orthodontics often results in wearing braces, but braces aren’t just for kids – more and more adults are embracing braces to get their perfect smile.

Orthodontics is increasingly popular with adults for a variety of reasons – more of us are realising how important a good smile is. Simple things like feeling ashamed of crooked front teeth can lead to a lifetime of photo albums consisting of covered mouths or smile-less shots. Many people who have experienced this feeling long for the day when they can flash a big, white, straight smile at the camera. Orthodontics makes that happen. British patients are fast catching up with their American counterparts, where teeth are seen as crucial in how attractive we are. Big, white, beautiful teeth are not things we are born with – orthodontics help make that happen.

Orthodontics – The Ugly Duckling Effect

But the belief that braces are ugly and worn only be geeky kids has put many self conscious teens and adults off orthodontics. Advances in orthodontics, such as the development of clear braces, or ‘invisalign’ has revolutionised all that. Regardless of whether or not you embrace clear braces, orthodontics has seen something of a comeback since the TV hit Ugly Betty brought braces back into fashion. In the show, the actress uses thick ‘rail track’ metal braces as shorthand to her ‘ugliness’. But that message is changing and more adults are making the decision to straighten their smiles using invisible, or clear, braces.

Investing in your Smile

In America and Canada, it’s common to see children wearing braces – orthodontics is a part of their lives, enabling them to have perfect teeth when they hit their teens. But not everybody gets the orthodontic treatments they need in childhood, and some people’s teeth come through later in life when they feel more self conscious about wearing braces (especially teenagers). But with clear braces, many more adults feel more confident about investing in orthodontics after not feeling 100% happy with their teeth throughout their early life. For some, it isn’t simply about getting the perfect smile – crowded mouths for example can be very painful. And in adulthood there are more events that might trigger our desire to finally address our crooked smiles – when you’re spending so much on a wedding for example, you’ll want to make sure your smile is as wide and beautiful as it can be for your wedding photos.
