About dental crowns

Dental crowns are restorations placed over the top of decayed or damaged teeth to add strength and stability. You may be advised to have a crown fitted if you have injured your tooth, have severe decay and have had root canal treatment, have a large cavity or are having a missing tooth replaced with a dental implant.

Crowns are versatile and are available in a range of colours and materials. Porcelain crowns are very popular because they are a very close match to healthy natural teeth and cannot be distinguished from the neighbouring teeth. As well as making the tooth stronger and enhancing its visual appeal, crowns also help to reduce the risk of decay and injury in the future.

How is a crown fitted?

Crowning a tooth usually involves two sessions. The first session is used to prepare the tooth and remove any decayed or damaged tissue and the second session is used to fit the crown. When the tooth is prepared, your dentist will shape and clean it and then create an impression using dental putty. The impression is sent to the laboratory where a highly skilled technician will create your brand new, custom-made crown. When your crown is ready, we will schedule another appointment and place it over the top of your tooth. Once we are sure of a perfect fit, the crown will be secured and your dentist will explain how to look after it.

Crowns should last 5-15 years, but it is important that you follow good hygiene routines and see your dentist on a regular basis.
