Articles How we can help people facing gum disease

How can we help?

Gum disease is one of the most common oral conditions. At Harley Street Dental Studio, we are experts in treating, diagnosing and preventing gum disease. If you’re worried about gum disease, you’ve come to the right place.

What exactly is gum disease?

Gum disease is a common oral disease, which affects the gums and can contribute to premature tooth loss. There are two main forms of gum disease: mild gum disease, which is known as gingivitis, and advanced gum disease, which is known as periodontal disease or periodontitis. Gum disease occurs as a result of the presence of harmful bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria feed, and when they do this, they produce acids, which irritate the gums.

In addition to pain, if you have gum disease, you may also develop these symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Redness
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth

Treating gum disease

The treatment pathway for gum disease is dependent on the severity of the condition. In mild cases we can often use cleaning treatments and provide advice about oral hygiene at home to ease symptoms. In more advanced cases, we may need to carry out intensive hygiene treatments on a regular basis. If gum disease is left untreated, it can result in damage to the bone tissue beneath the gums, which can cause the teeth to become loose in their sockets.

If you suspect that you may have symptoms of gum disease, we urge you to get in touch with us as soon as possible. The sooner gum disease can be treated, the better.

Prevention is always better than cure, and we encourage our patients to brush twice daily and clean between the teeth, follow a healthy diet, and make regular visits to the dentist.
