Articles How To Minimise Sensitive Teeth Problems In Central London

How can we help?

Tooth sensitivity is a very common problem and often occurs when you eat or drink something hot or cold. If you have sensitive teeth, it can be very painful, but there are steps you can take to ease pain quickly.

What causes sensitivity?

Sensitivity generally occurs when the protective enamel surface of the tooth becomes worn and the dentin becomes exposed. The dentin is the layer underneath the enamel, which contains the nerves and blood vessels. Sensitivity can also occur if a tooth is decayed or injured.

When should I see my dentist?

If you experience sensitivity on a regular basis or you are experiencing severe pain when you use a specific tooth (for example to chew or bite down on food), you drink or eat or you come into contact with cold air, you should see your dentist. Often, tooth sensitivity is symptomatic of an underlying problem with the tooth and it is best to check this out, just in case you need treatment.

What can be done for tooth sensitivity?

If you have sensitive teeth, this can have an impact on your day to day life, from putting up with pain, to making food choices. Thankfully, there are some simple things you can do to help ease pain, such as using sensitive toothpaste and choosing the right toothbrush.

Sensitive toothpaste helps to relieve pain associated with sensitivity and it can also help to prevent pain following regular use. Using the right toothbrush is important because if you brush incorrectly this can contribute to damage to the enamel. Ideally, you should try to go for a brush with soft or medium bristles and a small head, so that you can cover all the sides of the tooth and reach into the corners of the mouth.

If you have any questions about oral hygiene products or you are worried about tooth sensitivity, call us today to arrange an appointment. We encourage our patients to attend regular check-ups to reduce the risk of gum disease, decay and tooth pain.
