Why do people snore?

There are many reasons why people snore. In many cases, snoring is a short-term issue, which is often caused by sleeping on your back, drinking alcohol before bed or illnesses that make you feel congested, such as colds and flu. In other cases, when snoring is a more of a frequent or recurrent problem, snoring may be linked to smoking, being overweight or allergies. The noises you hear when people snore are caused by the vibration of the soft tissue at the back of the throat.

How we can help

If somebody snores on a regular basis, this may indicate that they’re not getting enough oxygen while they sleep, which can be a result of the airway being constricted. If making changes, such as switching to sleeping on your side or losing weight, haven’t worked, we may recommend using a device to open up the airways and increase oxygen flow while you sleep. We can provide a mandibular repositioning device or a tongue retaining device. The mandibular repositioning appliance is more commonly used, and it helps to keep the airway open during the night by pushing the lower jaw forward slightly.

If you snore on a regular basis, or you live with a snorer, and your sleep quality is suffering as a result, we may be able to help. We have extensive experience in treating people who snore, and we might be able to bring peace and harmony back to your home. Give us a call today to find out more and book a consultation!
