Articles How Do Dental Crowns Work For Patients In London?

How can we help?

We are committed to amalgam-free dentistry and we offer high grade porcelain crowns and aesthetically pleasing white fillings to restore damaged and decayed teeth. Our crowns are built to last and they can help to strengthen weakened teeth and give your tooth a beautiful natural glow.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are restorations, which are used to repair the teeth when they are damaged as a result of an injury, accident or dental decay. Crowns are generally recommended when the damage is too extensive to repair with a filling. It is also commonplace for crowns to be fitted following root canal treatment, which is a procedure used to treat an infected tooth, or dental implant treatment, when the crown is attached to the implant to replace a missing tooth.

Crowns are also called caps because they are placed over the top of the tooth.

How does dental crown treatment work?

Crowns are custom-made for each patient and they are designed to fit over the top of your damaged tooth. Before the crown is placed, the tooth is prepared. The preparation stage is designed to remove all the decayed tissue to reduce the risk of further damage and prevent the spread of infection; the tooth is numbed first to prevent pain. Once the tooth has been prepared and shaped, we create a mould of it, which will form the template for the crown. The crown is then fitted once it has been made; this session usually takes place around 2 weeks later.

Crowns are durable and strong and they should last for many years. Once you have a dental crown, it’s important to make sure you look after it carefully and maintain good oral hygiene at home. We will check your crown every time you have a routine check-up.
