Articles How A Tooth Extraction Can Save Your Life

How can we help?

It sounds a little over the top to say that a trip to the dentist could save your life. However, in some instances this may in fact, be true.

Why would I need a tooth extracted?

Tooth extraction is recommended when it’s not possible to save a damaged or infected tooth. In some cases, when the tooth is broken, for example, placing a filling or crown can restore it. If you have an infected tooth, treatments like root canal therapy can eliminate the need for extraction. When no other options are viable, extraction is usually the best course of action. If you leave an infected or broken tooth in place, there’s a risk of the infection spreading to the gums, and even further afield. There’s also evidence to suggest that poor oral health is linked to an elevated risk of other health problems, including heart disease.

How could going to the dentist save my life?

Aside from protecting you from further injury and infection, a trip to the dentist can also help you to keep your smile in tip-top condition, which will benefit your oral and general health. As part of our routine check-ups, we also provide oral cancer screening. Our dentists are trained to look out for the warning signs of oral cancer, and they can arrange further tests long before symptoms become noticeable. Like many forms of cancer, the earlier oral cancer is spotted and treated the higher the chances of survival.
