At Harley Street Dental Studio, we know all too well that many patients feel nervous about going to the dentist. Even though we are an incredibly friendly bunch, we understand that for some, a visit to the dentist is a very daunting prospect and we always try our best to make our nervous patients feel relaxed and calm.

In the most severe cases, when patients have a phobia of the dentist, they may avoid dental treatment for prolonged periods of time and this increases the risk of decay, and gum disease and even general medical conditions. Our aim is to work with nervous patients to gradually build their confidence and keep them up to date with routine appointments without having to confront feelings of anxiety and dread. As well as having an experienced and compassionate dental team, we also offer advanced treatments that minimise discomfort as well as treatment under sedation.

What is sedation?

Sedation is a technique used widely in medicine and dentistry. It involves using sedative medication to bring about a state of profound calm. When the effects start to become noticeable, you will feel drowsy and sleepy, but you won’t lose consciousness and will be able to speak to your dentist if you wish to. With sedation, you won’t feel any pain and you won’t remember much about the procedure once the effects of the sedative have worn off. You can go home straight afterwards, but you won’t be able to drive and may still feel a little drowsy, so we ask you to arrange to have somebody stay with you until you feel more alert. For the first 24 hours, it’s advisable to avoid drinking alcohol, exercising, driving and making any important decisions.
