Articles Did You Know Your Dentist Can Help with Headaches Too?
You may think that the only thing a dentist can help you out with is a new or improved smile, but you’d be wrong! If you suffer from headaches or jaw pain, our dentists may be able to help.
How can a dentist treat my headaches?
Sometimes, headaches, especially those that occur in the morning, can be caused by clenching the jaw and grinding the teeth while you sleep. The medical name for this is bruxism. When you grind your teeth during the night, this can increase tension in your facial muscles and cause headaches and neck, shoulder and jaw pain. Often, people who grind their teeth aren’t aware that they do it because they’re asleep, but a dentist may be able to spot signs of bruxism, including symptoms related to TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) and tooth wear. If you do clench your teeth while you sleep, we can provide you with a bite guard, also known as a splint, which prevents the upper and lower arches of teeth coming together. This protects your teeth, and it can also help to prevent headaches and jaw pain and stiffness.
Botox treatment for migraines
Migraines can make life incredibly tough. If you suffer from migraines and you’ve tried every treatment option out there, we may recommend trying Botox. Botox helps to ease pain caused by migraines in patients who have migraines several times every month. Botox prevents muscle contraction, but it also affects nerve signals, which reduces the severity of pain.
