Articles Did you know a Dental Crown Can Help Save Your Teeth?

How can we help?

If you’ve injured your tooth or you’ve got a decayed tooth, did you know that a new crown could save your smile? Crowns are restorations, which are used to strengthen teeth that have been weakened through injury or decay. They are placed over the top of the tooth and are subsequently sometimes known as caps.

What is a Crown?

A crown is a type of dental restoration, which helps to make your tooth stronger when you have a large cavity or a fractured or badly chipped tooth. Crowning the tooth involves placing a cap made from ceramic material or metal over the existing tooth structure. With a crown in place, there’s a much lower risk of damage in the future. Crowns can also have amazing aesthetic benefits, especially if you choose a porcelain crown.

What does Treatment Involve?

Crowns are custom-made, so that they fit your tooth perfectly. Before your dentist creates a putty mould of your tooth, they will prepare the tooth and clean it thoroughly. When the tooth is ready, the putty impression will be made and sent off to the laboratory. A temporary crown will be fitted until your new crown is ready. Around 2 weeks later, your bespoke crown will be placed and secured.

If crowns are well cared-for, they can last from 3-10 years. When you come in for routine checks, your dentist will have a look at your crown and check that it’s in good condition. If there are signs of wear and tear, we may recommend replacing the existing crown.

If you’ve been involved in an accident or your tooth is infected, a new crown may be just what you need. Call us now to arrange an appointment.
