Lumineers are often referred to as the ‘contact lenses’ of the dental industry. They are a brand of dental veneer which is so thin that they virtually require no preparation on the teeth before they are fitted. As with traditional veneers, they can be used as an alternative to treatments such as teeth whitening and can also be a way of reshaping the teeth. However, unlike traditional dental veneers, Lumineers can, in some cases, be fitted without removing any of the surface of the tooth.
Lumineers are not as widely available in the UK as some other cosmetic dental treatments, but there are some dentists in London who offer this effective treatment.
Having Lumineers fitted is very simple because none of the tooth structure has to be altered or removed. This also means that the treatment does not need to be permanent because the teeth would still be functional if the Lumineers were taken off. This is the not how treatment will unfold in every case, but you are able to discuss the ins and outs of your treatment during an initial consultation.
The dentist will take moulds of your mouth structure and consult with you about which shade of white will best match your colour. The moulds are sent away to the dental laboratory in America so that the Lumineers can be custom-made to fit your specific case. Once the dentist has them they are merely cemented onto the front of the tooth for a new smile.
