Your teeth are made of strong stuff, but dental injuries are fairly common and accidents can happen at any time. If you do experience a dental injury, it is a good idea to try and see your dentist as quickly as possible.

Types of dental injury

There are many different types of dental injury and some cases require emergency treatment. Examples of dental injuries include severe dental pain, dental fractures, jaw fracture and facial injuries and dislodged teeth.

Dislodged teeth

If you lose a tooth and it comes out completely, it may be possible to save the tooth if you can get to a dentist very quickly. Pick the tooth up (holding the crown, not the root) and store it in a glass of milk; if you do not have a glass or milk to hand, clean the tooth using water and then hold it between your cheek and your gum. If a child has lost a tooth, do not advise them to do this as there is a risk of choking. Your dentist will try to re-implant the tooth and it may be possible to save the tooth.

Dental fractures

If you fracture your tooth, you may need urgent attention; arrange to see your dentist as quickly as possible. Your dentist will X-ray your mouth to check the severity of the fracture and then they will decide on an appropriate course of action. If you have sustained a facial injury and you suspect that your jaw may be broken, visit your nearest Accident and Emergency department.

Dental pain

Abscesses can cause sudden and serious pain and your dentist will try to ease your discomfort as soon as possible. If you experience toothache on a regular basis, this can indicate that you have tooth decay and it is a good idea to arrange to see your dentist so that treatment can be arranged before the situation gets any worse.

Chipped teeth

Chipped teeth are not usually an emergency, but you may wish to see your dentist, as chips can affect the aesthetic of your smile, as well as weakening the teeth and making them more susceptible to damage.
