What causes white spots?

White spots are commonly found on the teeth following orthodontic treatment, but they can also be caused by decay and cavities and over-exposure to fluoride. Childhood illnesses that affect the strength of the enamel can also have an impact. White spots don’t harm your health, but they can affect the look of the smile, and this can impact self-esteem.

What can be done?

There are various options for white spots. Often, when you have fixed braces, it’s common to follow treatment with whitening treatment to try and brighten up the smile. In cases where white spots are caused by decay or fluorosis, it may be possible to address the issue with veneers or with a treatment known as Icon. Veneers will only mask the issue, while Icon will alter the colour of the natural tooth surface. We offer a host of different veneer treatments, including MACveneers, Lumineers and Da Vinci veneers.

Icon is an infiltration technique, which penetrates the porous enamel coating of the teeth to even out discolouration. It is painless, there is no drilling involved, and treatment takes less than an hour.
