What causes tooth wear?

Most commonly accelerated tooth wear is caused by bruxism. This is the medical term for grinding the teeth. Many people grind their teeth without even realising that they’re doing it, as it tends to be a subconscious action that takes place while you sleep. Bruxism can damage the teeth, and it can also cause TMJ disorder, a group of symptoms that affects the temporomandibular joint. This joint connects the skull to the lower jaw. Signs include headaches, stiffness in the jaw, and a restricted range of movement.

Abrasion and erosion are other common causes of dental wear and tear. Erosion is caused by acids, which attack the enamel surfaces. Abrasion is usually associated with brushing too hard.

How can I prevent tooth wear?

You can reduce your risk of tooth wear by brushing gently and avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
