Types of dental injury

There are many possible types of dental injury, from avulsed teeth to jaw pain, abscesses and fractured teeth. Sometimes, urgent treatment is required, while other cases are not so serious. However, if you have any doubts, it is always better to err on the side of caution and get checked out.

Avulsed tooth

If you have an avulsed tooth (a tooth that has been knocked out) it may be possible to save the tooth, if you are able to see a dentist very quickly. If you have the tooth, wipe it gently, holding the crown section of the tooth and avoiding the roots. Hold the tooth between your cheek and gum until you get to the dental practice. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, place the tooth in a glass of milk. When you see your dentist they will try to re-implant the tooth back into its socket.

Fractured tooth

If you have a fractured tooth it is likely that you will experience tooth pain and increased sensitivity when you use the affected tooth. It is advisable to see your dentist so that they can examine and X-ray the tooth so that they can determine the extent of the damage and administer treatment, if required.

Jaw injuries

If you suffer an injury and you suspect that you may have a fractured jaw, you should visit your local accident and emergency department for an X-ray.
