DR. THORNE: Implants are now considered the optimum way to replace missing or loose teeth. It is essentially a titanium fixture that goes where you are missing the tooth. After that is healed, which can take 3-6 months, a tooth is placed on top the fixture. I have got a computer demonstration here with which I am going to show you how it works. This person here is missing a back tooth. The implant is placed in the gap. We then let it heal over a few months. After awhile an abutment, which connects the implant to the crown is attached and then finally the crown is placed on top to give you a nice pleasing result. Anyone with missing or loose teeth is a great candidate for implants. Often with loose teeth it can become difficult to chew or eat with and similarly your confidence can be affected because they can be moving around, in which case the teeth may be removed and implants place instead of them. If you are missing lots and lots of teeth, you do not need to have one implant per tooth. There are various combinations of treatment where we can place one or two and a denture on top that clips onto it, a bit like a coat popper, so it is more stable that your normal or you can have something fixed in the mouth where you can have several implants and then that is now bridged over the top.
