MAC Veneers

September 12, 2007

A question that is very often asked by my new patients is this:

“Which porcelain veneers are the best Dr Hughes?”

The answer to this question has 3 parts:

Dental porcelain veneers are not a product that you can buy from a shop and choose from a shelf. A great degree of clinical skill and artistry goes into the design, preparation, fabrication and placement of dental porcelain veneers.

Each porcelain veneer is specifically crafted to fit each individual tooth on each individual patient. No two porcelain veneers are exactly alike.

There are many different types of porcelain to choose from. The different porcelains have different visual and mechanical properties; some are more natural looking, some are much stronger than others.

There are many different dental technicians and laboratories making porcelain veneers, each with a different ‘look’ to their work and different levels of quality and craftsmanship.

There are many dentists providing porcealin veneers for their pateints, each with different levels of skill, artistry, experience and personality!

So how do I choose which veneers to have?

Look at the results the dentist has already produced for his patients

Look at the level of experience of the dentist and the laboratory and the qualifications they have.

Choose a beautifully aesthetic porcelain that also has very high strength

My preferred choice of veneer are called MAC veneers, from MicroDentalLaboratories in Dublin, California, USA. www.macveneers.com

Evolution tooth whitening hits the UK!

We are delighted to announce that the Enlighten ‘Deep Bleaching’ tooth whitening system is now being used at the practice! For the last 2 months we have been almost exclusively using this incredible tooth whitening system, called Evolution.

Why Enlighten?? Simply because the results are amazing; the very best tooth whitening system I have ever used, and I have been whitening teeth for the last fifteen years, from it’s very first introduction to the UK. I can confidently say to my patients now that they can expect a guaranteed result of a shade of at least B1 or lighter! In fact, in most cases we are reaching a shade of o2o and sometimes even o1o! Evolution will whiten teeth beyond any other system, up to 16 shades lighter.

A recent study has shown that over 60% of people who have had ‘laser’ or ‘power’ whitening with a light-based system are disappointed with the long-term results. This is because the effects of the whitening were not very good in the beginning or that they faded quickly.

The results of the deep bleaching technique are better than the other treatments and are permanent, if used correctly.

Now for a bit of Q&A! I have put together some questions commonly asked about tooth whitening below.

Q. Why does it work so well?

A. 3 reasons: The treatment involves a very unique bleaching tray that allows maximum contact between the teeth and the bleaching gels. The whitening gels are specially formulated for a longer duration of effect and for minimum sensitivity. The intensive combination of whitening your teeth at home followed by a ‘power’ whitening immediately after maximises the bleaching action.

Q. Will my teeth look too white?

A. No, natural teeth rarely look too white. Sometimes very white crowns or veneers can look too white because they are made of procelain

Q.Will my crowns, veneers or fillings change colour?

A. No, sometimes you may need to change some of these after bleaching

Q. Is there pain or discomfort?

A. You may get some transient sensitivity. However with the Enlighten system the levels of sensitivity are the lowest of any whitening system I’ve used. I have tried every major tooth whitening system on the market and I can confidently say I am happiest with Evolution deep bleaching. The system incorporates a desensitising swab that you can use at home. No other teeth whitening product provides one.

Q. How long does it take?

A. 2 weeks after the delivery of your Evolution bleaching trays. These are thin and comfortable and must be worn in bed for 14 nights, then on the 15th day you come into the practice for a power whitening treatment that takes only 40 minutes.

Q. How long does it last?

A. With some very simple maintenance the results are permanent! In other words there is no need to come back for costly repeat treatments and the results do not fade if you follow the maintenance guidlines our cosmetic dentists will give you.

Q. Is it safe?

A. Completely, the materials have been used in dentistry for over 100 years.

Q. Does bleaching strip away my enamel?

A. Absolutely not. With careful use and following the guidelines of an experienced cosmetic dentist the treatment will cause no loss of enamel.

Q. Is it good value for money?

A. The Evolution tooth whitening system is, in my opinion, the best value for money of all the available treatments currently being marketed. As mentioned above the results are almost never disappointing and more frequently dazzling. It costs less than a traditional laser whitening and home tray kit. Feel free to call my practice reception for our latest offers!

I hope you’ve found this informative and helpful. Thank you for reading our first dentistry blog and feel free to email any questions or discussion about tooth whitening
