New study suggests brush teeth twice a day ‘to prevent heart disease’

May 31, 2010

A new study published in the British Medical Journal last week claims that people who brush their teeth less than twice a day were 70 per cent more likely to develop heart disease. This is adding to previous studies which have shown a link between gum disease and overall health, researchers acknowledge that the findings are statistical and do not confirm a direct causal link between gum disease and cardiovascular health. Here at Harley Street Dental Studio we recommend you visit our hygiene team on average every 3-6 months depending on your needs.

Bad teeth can age women

February 5, 2010

According to an article on the Mail Online having bad teeth can age a women by up to 13 years. The article discusses the findings from Dental Ambassador for Oral B, Dr Phil Stemmer, who carried out the Oral B Smile Report. Dr Stemmer showed two different photos of the same model to 2,000 Brits: in one photo the model has gleaming white teeth and in the second she has yellow, discoloured teeth. The report found that people guessed the age of the model with white teeth to be 31 years old, while they perceived the age of the model with discoloured teeth to be 44 years old.

Dr Stemmer is quoted as saying: ‘the research highlights the importance the appearance of your teeth can have on the way people perceive you.’  Oral B Smile Report also discovered that the majority of participants believed that people with good teeth would have attended a private school, attended university and are paid more than people with bad teeth. The article also points out the negative effects of smoking, not brushing regularly and drinking coffee or red wine on teeth.

January 25, 2010

BBC News Online reports that a chain of private dental practices in Hull is trialling Grindcare, a device that prevents teeth grinding during sleep by delivering a tiny electrical impulse when it detects that grinding is about to begin. The report says that it reduces up to 80 per cent of grinding within 2 months. Scientific adviser to the BDA, Professor Damien Walmsley is quoted saying, “Teeth grinding is a problem that affects a significant minority of individuals. It is often caused by stress. Patients who are affected by the problem should consult their dentist.”

Gene links heart and gum disease

Treating – Gum disease can ease “aid arthritis” symptoms

BBC Online recently reported on a study published by the Journal of Periodontology in the United States which linked gum disease with rheumatoid arthritis. The study suggested that gum disease is “prevalent” in people with rheumatoid arthritis and that anyone suffering from Periodontal/Gum disease could find relief from arthritis symptoms if they treat the underlying disease. British Dental Health Foundation chief executive Nigel Carter says the new research “supports existing evidence which found that extracting painful teeth had a positive impact on arthritic pain.”
Federico Tinti – Acting Periodontist for Harley Street Dental Studio supports this study and also adds that any disease/infection that is underlying in the body can have a knock on effect or infact make other illnesses worse. Periodontal disease must be treated by a Periodontist as it can cause loss of teeth and bone. It can be controlled but in advanced cases – not reversable.
