Articles What You Can Do In a Dental Emergency

How can we help?

Just like with minor medical emergencies, some injuries and illnesses are treatable at home and do not require the immediate attention of emergency service workers. The same is true of some minor dental injuries and ailments, although there are times when contacting your dentist is essential.

A list of common dental maladies that can be initially dealt with at home include toothache, bitten tongues or lips and particles caught between your teeth. These dental injuries can be dealt with at home before escalating to the level of professional care.

If you have a toothache, you should rinse your mouth using warm water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove food particles. You may also want to use mouthwash or gels to help relieve pain. If the pain persists, contact your dentist immediately.

Bitten tongues and lips can be cared for by wiping the area clean with a damp cloth. If bleeding persists, seeking medical help is advised. If food or other particles become lodged between your teeth, you should try flossing and only flossing to remove said particle. Never wedge any sharp object between your teeth. Contact your dentist if you are not able to free the trapped particle.
