Dental hygienists are trained in providing preventative treatment and intensive hygiene treatments to battle problems such as bad breath, discolouration and gum disease. The cleaning power of hygiene treatments is much greater than brushing at home and you will be amazed at the difference just one half hour session can make. As well as tackling existing oral health problems and preventing gum disease and cavities, hygiene sessions also provide intensive cleaning and polishing, which makes your smile look amazing.

What is a scale and polish?

If you have problems with plaque or tartar or you have gingivitis or halitosis, you may be advised to have a scale and polish treatment. There are two main parts to this treatment: the removal of bacteria, plaque and tartar from the teeth, which is the scale part of the procedure, and the cleaning of the teeth, which is the polish part. Scaling the teeth involves using specially designed dental instruments to remove stubborn plaque and tartar deposits from the cracks between the teeth, the tooth surfaces and the gum line. Once this has been broken down and removed, the teeth are cleaned thoroughly and polished, to leave them feeling smooth and looking bright and glossy.

A scale and polish is not a painful procedure, although it may feel a little funny to begin with! Most sessions are complete within 30-60 minutes.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

We recommend regular hygiene sessions (usually once per year) for all our patients as a means of maintaining high standards of oral health. However, if you have a high risk of oral health problems or you have existing conditions such as gum disease, you will be advised to see your hygienist more frequently.
