Articles Top Advice on Brushing and Flossing

How can we help?

Although it is hugely important to see your dentist every six months, it is equally vital to take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home. To do this, you should practice the recommended oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing on a daily basis. This will help to keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay.

Why brushing is important

In order to prevent plaque build-up, it’s essential to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Plaque forms from the starchy and sugary foods we eat and attacks the protective enamel surrounding our teeth. Brushing just once a day is not enough, as plaque takes between four and twelve hours to form, which is why you might notice it on your teeth when you wake up in the morning.

Using fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste is ideal because it actually helps to strengthen tooth enamel. We recommend using a soft-bristled brush and brushing for two minutes each time. Vigorous brushing or using a hard brush can damage the gums and wear down enamel over time. This leaves the teeth vulnerable and exposed, so it’s advisable to brush gently and often rather than scrubbing excessively hard once a day.

Going beyond the brush with dental floss

Flossing is also important because it cleans the parts of your mouth a toothbrush can’t reach. Floss is made from thin nylon or Teflon and is pulled between the teeth to remove food debris and plaque. If you’re new to flossing, you might find that your gums feel sore or bleed afterwards, but this will stop as you get used to it.
