Articles Three Ways to Protect Your Teeth From Gum Disease

How can we help?

Did you know that gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the UK? If you’re keen to keep your gums in check and maintain a healthy smile for as long as possible, here are 3 steps you can take to prevent gum disease:

  1. Brush: this may seem obvious, but studies show that almost half of adults don’t brush their teeth twice a day. Brushing is so important because it removes traces of bacteria and food debris from the mouth, reducing the risk of plaque formation and subsequently, lowering the risk of decay and gum disease. Brush for 2 minutes every morning and evening, angling the brush head to clean along your gum line.
  2. Visit your dentist: if you’re guilty of waiting until there’s something wrong to give your dentist a call, make 2018 the year you resolve to keep up to date with routine checks. If you see your dentist every 6-9 months, this will reduce your risk of developing gum disease, infections and cavities drastically. Check-ups are painless and they only take a few minutes. Call us now if you’re overdue a check-up. If you notice signs that may be linked to gum disease between appointments, don’t wait to see your dentist. Symptoms include swollen and sore gums, bleeding when you brush and redness in the gums.
  3. Watch what you eat: your diet is really important when it comes to protecting your teeth and gums. Moderate your intake of sugar, steer clear of acidic foods and drinks and drink plenty of water. Try and avoid snacking between meals and chew sugar-free gum after eating to stimulate the gums and increase saliva production.
