Articles The Hidden Signs of Oral Cancer

How can we help?

The latest statistics from Cancer Research UK suggest that there has been a 68 percent increase in the number of cases of oral cancer in the last 20 years. One of the most worrying issues is that 5-year survival rates have stalled when there have been major improvements in rates of other forms of cancer. The problem is that the majority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and this means that the chances of effective treatment are lower. At Harley Street Dental Studio, we’re keen to support the fight against mouth cancer, and we’re eager to raise awareness of the warning signs.

The hidden signs of oral cancer

Many people are familiar with the warning signs and symptoms of breast and testicular cancer, but do you know what to look out for when it comes to oral cancer? Sadly, most people aren’t aware of the symptoms, and by the time they notice abnormal changes, the cancer is at an advanced stage.

Symptoms of oral cancer may include:

  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Unexplained oral pain
  • A persistent sore throat
  • Ulcers and sores that take longer than 2 weeks to heal
  • Abnormal swelling or lumps
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained bleeding

If you notice these symptoms, there’s every chance that there’s nothing to worry about. However, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Early diagnosis can increase the chance of survival by up to 90 percent.

We also strongly recommend regular dental checks. We carry our oral cancer examinations as part of our routine check-ups as standard.

If you’re worried about oral cancer, or you’d simply like to learn more, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our dental team will be more than willing to help.
